Disappointing trip to Lonavala and Khandala
We started off with a sunny Sunday morning downhill hoping to make a great trip to Lonavala and Khandala. We were expecting the clouds and the mists to be at minimal based on weather forecasts but did not seem to go that well.
We started off at Shirgaon visiting the Sai Mandir. Sorry folks no pictures here as we needed to let our cameras submitted before entering. This Mandir is made in replica to the original Sai Mandir in Shirdi, Maharashtra. It had a similar idol and architecture and can be included as a destination in your trip planner.
We later headed to the Karla caves but unfortunately the local policemen did not allow us to drive up the hill as there was enough traffic up there already and it was creating a bottleneck. We decided to trek up but the weather was pouring heavy so we changed our minds. Trek is not a great thing when you have family with you.
Disappointed, we drove to Lonavala and were greeted with a terrible traffic jam. This continued for 2 hours with a snail’s pace. Later we figured that Lonavala was stuffed with cars flocking from Mumbai as it was an extended weekend holiday on occasion of Indian Independence Day. So for you know, Lonavala and Khandala is the only quickest weekend getaway from Mumbai which is supposed to be a good hill station.
Anyway, we somehow managed to drag ourselves to the Lonavala lake and we took a sudden halt when we were told that the police is routing the traffic from the top of the hill for releasing the bottleneck. We were hoping this not to take much longer but it was JUST the day.
We stayed halted for another couple of hours, when we go to drive up to the Tiger Point and enjoyed the mist with an amazing waterfall.
We then wanted to visit the Bhushi dam and enjoy getting drenched in there but again the traffic just spoiled the whole mood and day. We could not believe we spent 6 hours of the day just sitting inside the car without food and did nothing.
We decided to call it a day and wrap the trip up as it was getting dark. We skipped Khandala for the next time and hit the Mumbai-Pune Expressway back home.
Guys, a piece of advise - DO NOT plan a visit to Lonavala and/or Khandala when you sense an extended weekend. The traffic bottleneck there is going to kill the whole day and mood. Just another experience.
Misty Mahabaleshwar
A randomly planned trip to Mahabaleshwar was expected to be relaxing and rejuvenating but turned out to be an different experience with crashing rains. Visibility was 5% and wet and risky pathways were a horrid treat to walk on. Dense fog around didn’t show a view but a heavenly experience with rain sprayed clouds gushing right into your face.
Here is what I mean.
